J.Crew prices: China vs. U.S.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that I logged onto jcrew.com two seconds after my last post. I got all excited about its promises of free shipping, free returns, duty free shopping to China, but they do charge a premium. I guess that shouldn’t be a surprise, either.

So you can see here, prices in China:

And here, prices in the U.S.

It seems that in general, prices are about 35 percent higher in China.

That’s kinda a lot, isn’t it? Would I feel better if they kept the prices the same but instead charged a buttload on shipping & handling and customs fees (which is what Gap’s brands do)? Yeah, now that I come to think of it, I actually think this is better, because at least then you don’t have that sticker shock at the end when you realize that your $100 order is actually now $230 after all the additional fees are added up. That sucks. Trust me, I know.
